The Knight, the King, and the Fool

By River Ordóñez

The knight kills for the many
Or so he says as he marches
Through the fields of red wheat
The bodies all counted
He listens to what is told
Not a whisper against its command
For he kills for his people
His honor bleeds red

The king dies alone
His knights gone to glory
His people call for a trial
The dead beg for a sound
So he says it was for his kingdom
When he watched them fall
They paid with their lives
So he shall roll that same die

The fool lives to tell the tale
Up in the highest tower
A crown sat heavy on his head
A sword sat at his side
He awaits in a fallen kingdom
For any passerby
To spin the tale of the fool
Who watched it all go awry
