Just a Fairytale

Medieval castle set in bucolic landscape.

By Shaneire Dames

She was captured,
high and isolated from a life she didn’t know she had
Unbeknownst to the royalty
which enslaved her as an infant.
She was unaware
that in a far away place,
She was an heir.

Frantic parents search for their precious pearls.
They fall to defeat as their world falls apart.
High and isolated from a life she didn’t know she had
lies the pearl with long golden locks
that glow vibrantly when a siren song mocks.

She thinks about what life outside her imprisonment would look like
She thinks about
the grass
the dirt
and if they’re as she dreamed they’d be.
She thinks about the sun, so bright and isolated, like her.
How did it manage to shine its brightest when stuck in nothingness?
Could she turn her isolation into something?

Then there comes the day,
where she no longer has to stay,
high and isolated from a life she didn’t know she had.

After some apprehension,
she steps outside without any more doubt.

She takes in the fresh air
drowning in its wake,
She’s excited for the life she had longed to make.
Her world as she’s known it
is now fake,
replaced by the memories she will soon create.

Go on Rapunzel,
let down your hair,
for you’ve been captured your whole life.
It is only fair.
