Capital of the World

by Jeffrey Olivares

My Parents always told me
Nosotros solo hablamos español en la casa
But in the busy city of New York
English is what connects me to others
Hablando español me conecta con la comunidad
Corona Queens the capital of the world
Que la Luna se ve más iluminado
103rd street vendors selling meals for a living
Tacos de al pastor, salchipapa, and churros
Fruits and Vegetables placed upon the pavement
Los niños de 61 brawling outside their school
With parents screaming que se llama la policía
Drunks sleeping under the 7 train line,
landrones stealing from Walgreens
Prostitutes waving down the working class fathers
going home to feed their families
When I step out of my area
I’m a completely different human being
From the education I learn
From the discussion of belief
From the wrongs I have done
From the words that I speak
Los calles de manhattan
The noisy over crowded manhattan streets
Tourist all over the world
Yet they understand the language I speak
My parents understand that very well
The diversity of the lonesome tristate area
Que la vida aquí es todo que yo necesito
From the Capital of the world
Corona will forever be my home
And my mom’s Quesadillas
me llena con disfruto
