Between Me and the Sky

by Andrea Aguilar

The bench was cold; my hands pressed alongside the rim of the bench. I wasn’t sure why I woke up so early if I had no reason to be here; I knew this well, and yet here I am. The breeze made me uncomfortable; the sweater wasn’t helping me, and instead only made me colder. I looked up at the sky for a moment, watching the clouds cover the sun.

A child’s cheering was getting closer, caving me in. I looked over to where it was coming from. Envious. It ached my stomach, and it made me feel sick. I wasn’t sure why I felt this way; I had no ties attached to the child. Yet, I looked at it with anger. Everything about it made me feel nauseous, like at any moment all my insides would blend into one single matter, a slow threat to spill out of my mouth and onto the ground.

The child and its family passed by me, showing no concern towards me. I was nothing but a stranger to them. The cloud uncovered the sun, and it was bright and sunny again. I jolted as my phone rang, scrambling to take it out from my pocket.

“Hello?” I asked, too shaky to see who had called. “Leonid. Are you coming?” His voice was venomous, a soft smile appeared on my face. “Yes, Papa. I will go today. I wanted to know if we could do something together—“ The other line cut off before I could finish. On purpose, like always. The distance between us is much greater, and our blood ties thinning.

The cloud covered the sun once more, the rage inside me staying with the clouds, where only I exist.
