What are you most interested in capturing with your photography?
I’m most interested in capturing culture, community, and real moments in people’s everyday lives that are normally overlooked. A lot of my work focuses on music scenes, hip hop history/culture, and the way music connects people and shapes communities.
How would you describe your photography style
I would describe my style as organic. I like capturing everything on film, candid photos, natural lighting, and images that feel raw, honest, and nostalgic instead of overly posed. I also enjoy combining photography with journalism and storytelling.
What’s a project you’re currently working on?
Right now, I’m continuing to cover music culture and local creative communities and I am also covering the impact of the remaining businesses surrounding Jamaica Coliseum Mall that relied on the coliseum’s foot traffic.

Shadai DeJesus is a journalism student and photographer originally from Long Island, NY. Her work focuses on culture and community with particular interest in hiphop history, different music scenes and documentary storytelling. Shadai hopes to pursue broadcast she documentary journalism, using multimedia storytelling to document overlooked narratives.
