You Might Refuse to Stay, So The Best That I Can Do Is Pray

Fortune’s promiscuous sister
Fate’s rowdy cousin
My closest lover and
worst enemy.
A flighty thing
who travels on the wind,
never by my side
for more than a weekend.

I feel her presence, often
in the company of others.
Raising hopes
and crushing dreams
With a single hand.
Always by the
hot seat,
in sight of all the action.

How misfortunate am I
to have known her so intimately,
Yet kept at such a cruel distance.
Every time I dare look to another,
she seduces me
back into her arms

Praised be her champagne kiss, which
fills me with liquid
courage.
Molten gold flows
through my veins when
she’s near.

Praised be her Midas’ touch, which alights
Sparks
against my skin,

down my arms,
through my hand
to the tips of
my fingers, enclosing
her hand in
mine.

Another kiss,
the breath of life,
before the first toss of the dice.
The night is young,
And for the first time in a longtime,
So am I.
Her presence de-ages me.
Her love revives me.
We paint
a pretty picture.

A beautiful display,
a temporary exhibition.
Out of sight, out of mind.
Left to varnish, fade,
to be
forgotten.
I’m alone once more
but not bitter.
For I know one day
she’ll return.
Praised be
My Golden Goddess, The Queen of Chance
Farewell, Lady Luck
