My Poem

Two young children drawing on the ground with chalk.

by Lejla Krasnic

And who can remember the words and details
I can only my heart pounds and the fog prevails
The world is getting too small, the sky narrow
My throat becoming stuck, I can barely swallow

And why is it not me instead, why him,
He’s too young, not ready to swim
Mother always said I was the brave one
He’s too soft, truly his mother’s son

My thoughts going back and forth, back and forth,
Can’t find any explanation to bring comfort
How could I have prevented his disease
They can’t see my panic attack and unease

My mother falling to her knees
It’s not bringing any ease
I’m also your daughter
Don’t you hear me stutter?

Get it together,
It will get better
It’s just diabetes, he’s still alive
With our help, he can even thrive

And even though it’s been three years,
When he says his sugar is low, I get the freeze
He learned to live with it, and I moved away
But I have to move on, at least till holiday
