Sunset in Kamakura

by Arben Alovic

I wasn’t around for goodbye.

Quiet days on black sand beaches

As you gasped

For the air that wouldn’t fill your lungs.

I wonder if you reached out

For me; oceans away, unaware

That the euphoric days were fading

Like the sun dipping

Below the horizons.

As I walked the red temples,

Leaving prayers to gods, who allowed me

To play the fool as I clapped my hands

And threw my wishes away.

Into the water, the coin faded

In the dark, as you did.

I missed the words that I couldn’t hear,

That you couldn’t say.

The finality of the ending you didn’t know was coming.

There was never going to be another hello, or a last goodbye.

I held the card in my hand,

Scared to accept that I knew

You’ll never read it;

You’ll never know what I wrote,

As I threw the dirt onto you, burying the rose

In the hole so deep.

I watched the trees weep their petals

as you became one with the ground.

The flowers of yesterday will never bloom

Again, and all I find is loneliness

In the May breeze.
