By Janella Katapang
I am sorry
I lied when I told you were born from love
It’s not in our blood to lie
but the Adams
they make up everything.
and no, it’s not his fault just because
bruises couldn’t be hid
The truth is
I am dying
my roots unable to sustain the green and the brown
Blue was once the river
choked on plastic waste
poisoning our family, who has to buy
water from the big businesses on top of the hill
The truth is
we are not the aliens
Just people with no papers
from a land invaded by creatures with tentacles
disguised in masks of politics and power
slithering in the blankets of little girls and young women
who look like you
So, please wake up and get out of bed
Replace the vodka in your sippy cup
with a glass of lemonade borrowed from
our neighbor, Mama G
Stand by her
when you see her crying out in the streets
Rise with all mothers who have lost their children
Rise like the morning sun at 8 or 9
For you, my child, are made of fire
Fierce with the boiling blood of your ancestors
Snake skinned and centipedes long of wisdom equipped
Bathala na
Take the sword in your right
Left fist up
Be bold and daring
